Root Canal Treatment in Maida Vale
Root canal treatment (endodontics) removes infected or inflamed tissue from inside a tooth to relieve pain and save the tooth from extraction. At Abi Dental Care in Maida Vale, our principal dentist Dr Hamid Kiani carries out root canal treatment under local anaesthetic, usually over one or two visits, so you can keep your natural tooth for as long as possible.
When you might need root canal treatment
- A severe or lingering toothache
- Pain when biting or on hot and cold
- Deep decay that has reached the nerve
- A cracked, damaged, or heavily filled tooth
- Swelling, an abscess, or a gum boil near a tooth
- A tooth that is darkening in colour
What happens during root canal treatment
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic so the procedure is comfortable. Dr Hamid Kiani removes the infected pulp, then cleans, shapes, and disinfects the fine canals inside the root before sealing them with a special filling. The tooth is then restored, often with a crown to protect it. For complex cases, we use 3D CBCT imaging to plan treatment accurately.
Is root canal treatment painful?
Modern root canal treatment is not the painful procedure it is often rumoured to be — in fact, it relieves the pain caused by infection. Because the tooth is fully numbed, most patients feel little or no discomfort during treatment. Any mild soreness afterwards usually settles within a few days and is easily managed with ordinary painkillers.
Root canal treatment vs extraction
Wherever possible, saving your natural tooth is the best option. It keeps your bite and appearance intact and avoids the gap that would otherwise need filling with an implant or bridge. Extraction is only recommended when a tooth is too damaged to save. If a tooth cannot be kept, we can discuss replacing it with a dental implant.
Aftercare and recovery
It is normal for the tooth to feel a little tender for a few days. Avoid chewing hard foods on it until any permanent crown is fitted, keep up with good oral hygiene, and attend your follow-up appointment. With proper restoration and regular check-ups, a root-treated tooth can stay healthy and functional for many years.
Do I need a crown after root canal treatment?
Often, yes — particularly for back teeth. A root-treated tooth can become more brittle over time, and a crown protects it from fracture while restoring full chewing strength. Dr Hamid Kiani will advise whether a crown is recommended for your tooth.

Frequently asked questions
How long does root canal treatment take?
Treatment usually takes one or two appointments of around sixty to ninety minutes each, depending on the tooth and how many canals it has.
Is root canal treatment painful?
No. The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so most patients feel little or no discomfort. The treatment actually relieves the pain caused by the infection, with only mild soreness for a few days afterwards.
How long will a root-treated tooth last?
With a good restoration, usually a crown, and regular check-ups, a root canal-treated tooth can last for many years and often a lifetime.
What happens if I do not have the treatment?
An untreated infection tends to spread, which can lead to an abscess, increasing pain, and eventual loss of the tooth. Treating it early gives the best chance of saving the tooth.
