What to do right now
For toothache, take your usual painkiller as directed on the packet and rinse gently with warm salt water. If a tooth has been knocked out, hold it by the crown, not the root, keep it in milk, and get to us immediately, as the first hour matters most. If a crown or filling has come out, keep it and bring it with you. Avoid very hot or cold food and chewing on the affected side until you are seen.
When to go to A&E instead
Go to your nearest A&E department if you have facial swelling that is spreading towards the eye or throat, difficulty breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, or a suspected broken jaw after trauma. These need urgent hospital care rather than a dental appointment. If you are unsure, call us and we will advise you.
What happens at your emergency appointment
The first priority is relieving your pain. Dr Hamid Kiani will examine the area, take an X-ray or CBCT scan if needed, and explain what has caused the problem. Where possible we carry out treatment to settle the symptoms at the same visit, such as draining an infection, dressing a tooth, starting root canal treatment, or temporarily repairing a broken tooth, and then plan any definitive work with you afterwards.
Common emergency treatments
Depending on the cause, urgent care may involve a temporary or permanent filling, re-cementing a crown, root canal treatment to save an infected tooth, treatment for gum infection, or an extraction where a tooth cannot be saved. If a tooth is lost, we can later discuss replacing it with a dental implant.
